Mercedes Schlapp's role as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't simple. She must contend with the president, who acts as his own director of communications as well as numerous legal fights which can disrupt the administration's messaging strategy as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversy. Schlapp was focused through the entire process, collaborating closely with the White House's legislative and political affairs teams, policy shops, and larger communications teams to oversee policy implementation. In her current role she's been focusing on a variety of topics, including safety at schools and the use of opioids. In her current position the director does not interact too much with journalists. The attention she attracted in March was when her name appeared as one of the contenders to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job as White House's advisor on strategic communications. She's faced with a president that acts as his own director of communications, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the administration's messaging strategy as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversies. However, throughout it all Schlapp has stayed focused on the mission in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political affairs and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well with the larger communications team to coordinate policy rollouts. The focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. The current position she holds doesn't require many interactions with reporters. But, back in March, her name was floated to be a possible person who could succeed Hope Hicks at the Communications Director job. The fighting has been nasty. Schlapp allied with Tony Sayegh, who was running for office. They started fighting in media. Schlapp called Sayegh after The Washington Examiner printed a bad report about him.
